NYC III 2007
Under the auspices of Youth Agenda, NYC III was organized and planned by a Preparatory Committee drawn from 15 youth serving organizations.
NYC III brought together over 700 youth leaders from all the eight provinces of Kenya. The objectives of the convention were:
- Review the status of implementation of NYC ’98 resolutions and evaluate the gains made by young people since 1997;
- To share experiences and lessons on how youth have addressed the challenge of leadership; and
- To chart a common course on national economic, political and social priorities to be lobbied for by the youth.
The convention’s glamour and flavor was the speeches and presentations made from young and inspiring leaders. The speakers and presenters at the Convention were drawn from various organizations with a track record of best practices in good governance. The overall feel of NYC III was that time is nigh for the young people of Kenya to take up the challenge to jumpstart the positive and sustainable change that the country so desperately needs.
Special resolutions were agreed upon by delegates in the following areas;
1. ON RECREATING THE REPUBLIC: THE AMBITIONS OF OUR GENERATION
2. YOUNG PEOPLE’S POLITICAL AGENDA IN 2007
3. ON REGIONAL INTEGRATION
4. ON GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS AND TRADE
5. ON AID, DONOR DEPENDENCY AND OUR ECONOMY
6. ON YOUNG PEOPLE TAKING OVER LEADERSHIP BY 2012
7. ON IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RESOLUTIONS: MECHANISMS AND OPERATIONALIZATION STRATEGIES
The delegates further agreed that there be follow up discussions to inform the implementation of the resolutions of the NYC III and that young Kenyans will decentralize the Convention to allow for implementation of the resolutions at grassroots level.
